At this age, kids need to move around, enjoy ample self-directed play, and have chances for open-ended and creative expression. Ask if the program is facilitated by an experienced teacher. Also check references or read reviews from other parents.
Some good questions: How is the class developmentally appropriate for toddlers? What experience do the teachers have with preschoolers? What skills are emphasized for ages 0 to 5? What are the philosophy and program goals?
If your preschooler doesn’t have much exposure to other kids, a group class is a perfect setting in which to build social skills and comfort level. After 2 or 3 sessions, your child should be interested and engaged. If not, consider trying somewhere else.
By 18 months of age, children benefit from consistent socialization opportunities. Up to three classes a week should be fine for most kids. Try to balance class time with lots of free time at home to develop creativity.
Make sure the class description meshes with your parenting needs and your child’s needs. You may want your toddler to spend more time outdoors or have more chances to connect with peers. Also look for one with a discipline style that matches yours at home.
