The Yes For Chess Academy is an online program where students have an all-access pass to learn chess throughout the week. Our academy is open to all students of different skill levels and allows students to learn and play as much chess as they feel comfortable with.
New students to the academy receive a complimentary 20 minute one on one lesson!
Schedule
Spring Session – March 23 to May 27
Drop-in chess games: Monday- Thursday at 3:30 p.m and 4:00 p.m.
Online Lesson
Each online chess lesson will meet on Zoom. Student's microphones and cameras will be disabled. Students will interact with the instructor and moderator through a Q&A feature. Other students cannot see other student comments, but the moderator and instructor can respond to each student. This allows each student to solve puzzles without influence from other student suggestions.
What will you teach?
In the first 30 minutes, the instructor will use a series of puzzles that increase in difficulty that show a reoccurring theme. The instructor will allow time for students to solve the puzzle, and then they'll walk through the problem, showing students how to avoid common mistakes.
After the 30-minute chess lesson, kids will play in an online chess tournament against their classmates. Games will be organized by their skill level (their ChessKid rating).
Our Chess Skills and Fundamentals class meets Tuesday, while our Advanced Chess Skills class is lead by IM Luis each Thursday.
Each registered student has the freedom to join both the Skills and Fundamental class and the Advanced Chess skills class.
Who teaches the class?
The academy will feature two resident instructors.
International Master Luis learned how to play chess as a 15-year-old, and within six years became an International Master! He is now training to become a Grandmaster. IM Luis has been teaching for 20 years. Luis’ passion for chess keeps the students enthusiastic about learning.
James Ursin is the Director of Teaching at Yes For Chess. This year will mark his 15th year of teaching chess in elementary schools. Students enjoy his fun approach and teaching style. James leads the chess fundamentals class each Tuesday.
ChessKid
Each Academy student receives a premium Gold membership to ChessKid.com. This allows students to play chess against their Academy classmates, access to over 1,000 video lessons, 50,000 puzzles, and the opportunity to learn and play chess throughout the week when convenient. We use ChessKid because it meets our standards for online student safety and provides a controlled playing environment to ensure that kids learn in a safe environment.
We will use Chesskid to assign weekly challenges to encourage students to play and learn chess throughout the week. Students will have a chance to earn rewards like one-on-one chess lessons or play against a chess master.
