Can you do math without numbers? Use your words!
Doing math is figuring out patterns and applying them to different situations.
Computational linguistics examines the patterns of different languages. Even if you don’t speak a language, you can figure out the meanings of words and grammar structures by noticing patterns and changes taking place in the language! This can apply to spoken languages and computer programs that examine language, as seen in this puzzle: https://nacloweb.org/resources/problems/2019/N2019-R.pdf
In this class, we practice using fun and challenging logic puzzles to translate words and sentences of a new language, discover the rules applying to that language, and even create sentences using the new words we have learned. Doing math without words is possible through identifying and applying patterns. It’s also fun to learn about different world languages!
