Overview

Goals:

  • To stimulate enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics
  • To teach major strategies for problem solving
  • To develop flexibility in solving problems
  • To strengthen Mathematical intuition
  • To foster creativity and ingenuity
  • To provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges
  • To learn to work effectively on a small team
  • To cultivate risk taking and tenacity

Our philosophy: Your brain is like a muscle - you have to use it to make it stronger. Mathletes will be solving challenging problems every week in practice.

Our Curriculum:  Our proprietary curriculum is available online and through print-outs. As a result, students have the opportunity to tackle fun challenges throughout the week in practice AND at home.  We have organized problems into progressively more difficult problem sets. This gives Mathletes multiple opportunities to feel successful. All answers can be processed online, giving students immediate feedback.

Math Competitions: Competitions do a fantastic job creating fun problems. They are often visual in nature, and are usually very different from what you find in a typical school setting. We do not approach competitions as a high-stakes endeavor. The goal is to have fun and try to solve some interesting - and challenging - problems.

Math Olympiad:  During the 'Olympiad Season' (Nov-March), students participate in 5 Math Olympiads during our regularly scheduled practices. Our team will be in Division E (4th, 5th, and 6th graders).  Students also participate in Junior Olympiads authored by Coach K.

Math Kangaroo: Students are encouraged to sign up for Math Kangaroo. This competition takes place once a year. We will practice on problems throughout the school year.

Fan4: This is a proprietary online math competition founded and authored by Coach K.

Puzzles & Games: Almost every week we will take an excursion and explore a logic puzzle, math game, building challenge, or topic from graph theory. This enables students to further develop their spatial intelligence, capacities for deductive reasoning and pattern recognition, number sense, and more.

Registration: We have in-person and online classes throughout the week.

My child had as much fun in online math camp this year as she did at in-person camp. Coach K did an amazing job pivoting this year to an online format to keep everyone safe amidst the pandemic. My child loved the activities, especially the zome building with the specially-delivered materials, and interacting with the other students and her CIT in small groups. Coach K does an incredible job of making math fun! Highly recommend. My child will definitely be back next year.

My 5th grade son really enjoys coming to this class. Coach K has a way of challenging the students to think differently and creatively about solving math problems while making it fun at the same time! The occasional treats for achieving goals are an added bonus!
