During this camp, students will learn the concepts and skills needed to work with glass as a medium by engaging in a number of glass crafts. This program at Maker Nexus teaches students the basics of working with stained glass, a gorgeous historical medium, as well how to fuse and slump glass in a kiln, and melt glass using a gas torch to create beads and marbles. Students will learn how to safely handle soldering irons and solder, copper tape, and flux, and how to safely cold cut and solder glass. They will apply these skills to designing and creating their very own stained glass window, ornament, and fully functional box, complete with a hinged lid. Besides cold glasswork, students will also learn the basics of hot glasswork, learning how to safely use a blowtorch and pliers to create marbles, paperweights, and animal figurines. By the end of the camp, campers will have the knowledge and skills to create art, jewelry, and small dishes out of glass.
