Overview

Student-Teacher Ratio 6:1

This introduction to the world of industrial design through woodworking will enable youth new to woodworking to develop modern woodworking skills safely in our community woodshop under the instruction of experienced woodworking instructors.

Students will get hands-on experience using a mini-lathe to turn wood  into finished projects like a wooden pen or magic wand,  an electric planer in the finishing of projects like a laminated cutting board or chess game board, and a bandsaw and drill press to complete projects like an analog clock or a wooden toolbox. Other projects include building birdhouses, planter boxes, and small display easels.  Our junior woodworkers are not limited to just these few sample projects, only by their imagination and the tools and time on hand.

In the process of building multiple projects, our junior woodworkers will learn modern wood preparation including measuring, joinery, planning, sanding, routing, lathing, cutting, gluing, and finishing techniques in this action-packed camp. Completion of this beginning woodworking will allow our junior woodworkers to continue onto our advanced woodworking camps that will challenge them to apply their skills to more complex wood projects.

Safety is our top priority, thus closed-toed/heeled shoes and form-fitting cloths and the removal of all jewelry. Safety glasses are required in the woodshop. Maker Nexus can provide safety glasses that are sanitized after each use, however, we recommend each student bring their own pair.  Masking is encouraged but no longer required at Maker Nexus.

It was great having him in the woodworking camp! I'm glad he had a great time, and we look forward to having him again. We will also add fall programs this year, which we think he will love. Thanks for supporting Maker Nexus!

Wow, this camp was great! My son learned way more than I expected and even built us a high quality chessboard as his final project. He learned how to use a wide range of tools and is now very eager to teach me everything he learned. The best part is that now he's ready to do projects on his own here at home. He tells me that he would highly recommend this camp to all of his friends and he's ready to sign up for the advanced woodshop camp next!

You will not find a better place to engage your child! The ratio is what makes it awesome (I think it was 1:6)! Our son and daughter were so excited to go everyday and work on their projects. At the end of the week long spring break session, they presented all the items they made. They got to experience the band saw, lathe, resin and so much more! They used creativity and communication as they had to tell about what they wanted to make and teachers could help them. Our daughter was the only girl attending camp that week but she loved it and wants to attend future sessions.
Questions & Answers
How will Covid concerns be handled? Will there be social distancing in the form of reduced classes and mandatory masks?
asked on Jun 12, 2020
Jun 13, 2020 - Eric Hess
We are following all of the County guidelines to keep everyone as safe as possible. We will be enforcing social distancing, as well as requiring masks at all times indoors. We've set up additional work space dedicated to students to give them more room to socially distance. We've limited camp enrollments as well, and will only be offering a single camp each week (typically we have 2-3 camps in various subjects running concurrently). The health and safety of our students and staff is our #1 concern, and we especially want to make sure students have a safe experience here. -

Thank you for your interest,We are working hard on getting the classes online. We have a schedule, but still need to finalize the write ups and photos. Target is to have all set by end of this coming week: There will be a mix of camps from Textiles, robotics, electronics, woodworking and laser/3d printing for a variety of ages. The week of July 4th will be day camps with a different theme each day - those are posted for sign ups already. -
