COSPLAY PROPS: Swords, staves n’ more!

Do you - or someone living in your house - often have your head in the clouds, in a world of heroes and villains, magic and science that’s so weird it’s basically magic, if we’re honest?

Do you - or someone you love - spend a lot of time gaming, with manga or on WebToons, writing fanfic of your favorite characters that you wish were in love (they are!), or role playing?

Do you - or someone you love - always act like the empty cardboard paper towel tube is a sword??

Do you - or someone you love - love making stuff with your hands?

Great news! If any of this is true, you or someone you love is already a COSPLAYER in their heart, and this is the camp to bring it all out!

What we’ll do:

  • Over the course of one week, students will visualize and design a 2D pattern to actualize into a 3D prop of their choosing.

  • Students can choose a character from many universes and properties like Zelda, She Ra, Fortnite, Owl House, and many more. A low instructor to student ratio ensures that each student has access to individual custom coaching. Your instructor will be available prior to the camp to help you make a great choice!

  • We’ll learn techniques to take the 2D design into 3D with skills including design, drafting, sculpting and building from diverse materials such as EVA foam, Worbla, Sentra, and other thermoplastics and cool cosplay materials!

  • We will break down each project and plan together, learning to take a big task and turn it into small, executable pieces.

  • At the end of camp, each student will take home a prop, and hopefully, the skills and knowledge to build more!

    Before Camp:

Upon signing up, you’ll receive a short questionnaire for the student, and some more information for the family!

Please read and respond to this questionnaire NO LATER than two weeks before class. This allows us to plan for the most fun, learning, and best possible outcomes for everyone.

Students will be asked to commit to one of two projects. Because of material costs, and the timeframe available, projects cannot be changed once class has started. Thank you for your understanding.

    PREREQUISITES
There are no prerequisites. Anyone can start at this beginning level class.
Students may be able to choose more ambitious projects if they have any of the following skills or experience:

  • Drawing and drafting by hand

  • Experience creating vector graphics

  • Sculpting in any medium, including polymer clays or paper mache, or digitally

  • Love to build things from kits (there’s no kit for this class, we’ll be making it all from scratch  - but it fulfills the same 3D building niche)

  • Have basic crafting experience with glues and simple cutting tools like Xactos

Do you - or someone you love - love digging around in your closet or the thrift store, putting together cosplay or hero-inspired looks, or just, in general, LEWKS??

What we’ll do:

  • Over the course of one week, students will learn to interpret an image of a finished garment into patterns, prototype and fit a garment, and create a wearable part of their character’s cosplay!

  • Students can choose a character from many universes and properties like Zelda, She Ra, Fortnite, Owl House, and many more. A low instructor to student ratio ensures that each student has access to individual custom coaching. Your instructor will be available prior to the camp to help you make a great choice!

  • We’ll learn techniques including drafting for patterns, making a muslin (prototype), fitting clothes to the individual, pinning practices, fabric choice and handling, sewing machine basics, and finishing techniques! These skills can be applied not only to cosplay, but making any clothes.

  • We will break down each project and plan together, learning to take a big task and turn it into small, executable pieces.

  • At the end of camp, each student will take home a cosplay garment, and hopefully, the skills and knowledge to create more!

Questions & Answers
How will Covid concerns be handled? Will there be social distancing in the form of reduced classes and mandatory masks?
asked on Jun 12, 2020
Jun 13, 2020 - Eric Hess
We are following all of the County guidelines to keep everyone as safe as possible. We will be enforcing social distancing, as well as requiring masks at all times indoors. We've set up additional work space dedicated to students to give them more room to socially distance. We've limited camp enrollments as well, and will only be offering a single camp each week (typically we have 2-3 camps in various subjects running concurrently). The health and safety of our students and staff is our #1 concern, and we especially want to make sure students have a safe experience here. -

Thank you for your interest,We are working hard on getting the classes online. We have a schedule, but still need to finalize the write ups and photos. Target is to have all set by end of this coming week: There will be a mix of camps from Textiles, robotics, electronics, woodworking and laser/3d printing for a variety of ages. The week of July 4th will be day camps with a different theme each day - those are posted for sign ups already. -
