The most important aspect of Camp Marco Polo was that it kept my son's (an only child with 2 working parents) interest and met his needs for connection and socialization since he has been at home for 4 homes. After a summer of STEM/coding camps, we found Camp Marco Polo focusing on the Silk Road from Venice to China - perfect since we visited both places in the last two years. Sheila did an amazing job of keeping the class personal, engaging and informative. My 8 year old son said this was his favorite camp because of the combination of stories, activities and music. Every night at dinner he would share what he learned such or experienced as Venice masks were used during the bubonic plague as a form of protection (I fact checked him on google!) or show me a historical map or ask me to make a mask with him. There is also a 1 hour music portion mostly fun and expressive rather than overly rigorous.

My son (rising 7th grader) thoroughly enjoyed this camp. He baked, he made masks, he learned to play pieces on the recorder, he learned about Venice... he was completely engaged for the entire camp! Sheila kept things interesting for the kids and was very kind. The music teacher Kelly was also excellent, giving the kids a taste of the music of the period.

Questions & Answers
Hi, Class sounds great. What are yout themes for Aug 3 and Aug 10 camps? Will you be sending out a list of a list of required materials shortly after registration so we can procure anything not included in the kit that you mail (eg related to cooking/food projects)? We are working and shelter in place so we have to order everything in advance. Thank you. (Camp Marco Polo Online w/ Home Kit) -

Hi, How much parent involvement is needed for this class? The class is listed for Kindergarten to 12th grade, and at the same time, I saw a review that said a 7th grader "baked." As working parents we can set up all the supplies before class but we cannot take time off to help our son with baking or other hands on experiments that might need adult supervision. Also, what is the student to teaher ratio? Thanks

Thank you for your interest in Camp Marco Polo's Virtual program. The activities such as baking are optional supplemental activities beyond the core program. There are 3 1-hr online sessions that are supervised with a student-teacher ratio of 6-8 max. The first hour involves storytelling/history of Silk Road, Marco Polo's life, etc. Then there is a 1-hour offline break with suggested optional activities related to the theme of the week - sometimes outdoors in the back yard, if available/accessible to families. The next hour online is a guided arts/crafts project. Children 8+ should be able to do these independently. However, younger children between the ages of 5-7 may need help, depending on their abilities. Activities may involve cutting, gluing, tracing, drawing, coloring, etc. The second offline hour is a lunch break. This is the time when food/cooking projects would be suggested as an option, though not all involve cooking. The final online hour is a guided music lesson, including singing, introduction of recorder as well as some music history related to the theme of the week. The next available week is that of July 27, with the theme of China. However, if interested, we need you to register today so that we may be able to mail supplies to you in time. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope your child will be able to join our next Caravan of Learning on an Unforgettable Journey of the Imagination! -
