2019 Camp Themes:
Venice: Venice, the City of Water and of Light, the Queen of the Adriatic, for centuries received at her doorstep the luxurious treasures from the East. From these gifts came the cultural blossoming known as the Renaissance. So in our first week, we explore what inspired Marco Polo's journey, and the influences he brought back to Europe from Asia, which led to the cultural reawakening of the Modern world from ancient roots.
Constantinople: Follow in the footsteps of the Seljuq dynasty, who established hegemony over most of West Asia and uncontested authority in Anatolia, witnessing tremendous commercial, artistic, and cultural activity in Constantinople.
Persian Empire: Iran, or Persia, stands as a bridge between East and West, a fact that has made this nation a watershed of history. Western Iran was influenced by Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome, while Eastern Iran was influenced by India and even China, ever since the ancient trade routes cross-pollinated these cultures. During this week, we walk in the shoes of the Persians at a critical crossroad in history, when the Sassanid Empire is overtaken by the force of Islam, a dramatic shift in the history and psyche of an ancient civilization.
Central Asia: The nomadic tribes of the Mongolian plateau have withstood the harshest of conditions in vast expanses of wilderness. We explore the echoes of their haunting stories and their enduring spirit during this week and discover the forces that contributed to the rise of the Mongolian Empire and its founder, Genghis Khan, the famed or infamous howling Blue Wolf.
Marco in China: Discover and understand what led to the power and wealth of China under the forceful rule of the Mongolian Emperor, Kublai Khan.
India: To the south of the vast Himalayan mountains sits the sub-continent of India. Though it was not part of the land route of the Silk Road, it was a very much a part of the sea trade between East and West. During this week, we take a detour to explore the significant influences and contributions of India and Southeast Asia as part of the water routes of both the Silk and the Spice trades.
Merchant's Paradise: Nothing can match the excitement and bustle of Market Day at a Constantinople Bazaar!
