San Francisco Rock Project

Our camper had an amazing first time experience at Rock Project camp! He loved getting to learn the different instruments and getting to be part of choosing what songs to perform at the show at the end of camp. We appreciated how the staff incorporated everyone's varying levels of skill and taste in music, and their generous support as the band's show came together!

Both of my kids were "founding members" of SF Rock Project. One is a now a profesional musician in NYC with a major label recording contract. The other is a lawyer but has a drum kit in his apartment which gets good use to this day. He played drums throughout high school, college, and played in a band while in law school. Rock Project laid the foundation for a lifetime of music appreciation, enjoyment, and a long-time friendships.

San Francisco rock project summer camp is the perfect introduction to music whether your child is just starting out Or has a bit of experience already. It is incredible to see how much progress they make in in just about a weeks time. The show at the end of the camp is Spectacular the kids get a flavor for performing live in front of an audience and there’s nothing quite like your first musical performance

Rock Project is great. Our younger kid found more traditional piano lessons boring but really enjoyed learning with Shark.

San Francisco Rock Project is a fabulous resource and community for the kids. It has been transformative for our teen, both musically and socially. Great instructors, great vibe. A real civic treasure.

I signed my kids up for the Rock Project summer camp two summers ago and it has had an incredible lasting impact on my whole family! All three of my kids continue to practice music and my oldest has absolutely blossomed in his continued lessons with the Rock Project. This organization is truly a gem.

My son has studied drums with the San Francisco Rock Project and has absolutely bloomed. He has had the opportunity to play music in street festivals, at farmers markets—all kinds of kid-friendly, no-pressure scenarios around the city. Kids aren’t pressured to be rock stars, just to do the best they can and be part of an ensemble. How many kids can show up at school Monday morning talking about how great their weekend music gigs went? Thank you, San Francisco Rock Project!

This program changed my kid’s life. The supportive group environment, exposure to a variety of musical genres, ongoing opportunities for live performance, deep instruction in music theory and just plain fun.

Before coming to the San Francisco Rock Project, I was a pretty nervous and shy kid. I knew I loved music but never felt comfortable enough to experiment and explore it as a creative outlet. That was until my parents found SFRP. I suddenly found myself engulfed in a musical community that I still keep in touch with to this day. I’m so grateful for what Rock Project has done in fostering my musical growth and creative process. Can’t recommend this place enough for parents with kids who are curious about starting to play music or just have a general interest in music.

Great program for youth wanting to learn to play live music with others. Good mix of individual learning and group workshop experience.

This group is fantastic! The teachers are top notch at teaching individual instruments as well as instructing kids on how to play rock music together, in a band. My son has grown so much as a musician, working with Shark and his team.

My daughters favorite camp all summer. This was so much fun and the end of camp live concert was so cute. Parents had fun and so did the kids.

My son has been attending Rock Project summer camps for many years now. He has lots of fun and learns a lot, not just about playing an instrument but also about teamwork and performing for an audience, two essential life skills. Shark and his team are top notch and love their jobs and it shows!

Attending a San Francisco Rock Project summer camp can literally be a life-changing experience. The instructors respect the kids' innate humanity and help them find their musical voice (whether that is on guitar, bass, keys, drums, or vocals). The caliber of performance they manage to create at the end of a one-week session is amazing.

Rock Project was the #1 defining experience of my life. As a young artsy weirdo, Rock Project gave me a safe space to explore myself alongside likeminded youths, continually nurtured by the charmingly grimy DIY environment we were surrounded by. SFRP is a truly one of a kind music school, and I owe it more than I could express in this little box of text. 1000/10 would recommend

Our 7 year old has been at SFRP for the past 2 years. When he arrived, he did not want to hear about piano instruction anymore, but was still very attracted to music. With that in mind, they let him explore with different instruments with no pressure and that reconciled him with the piano. Beyond incredible! For the past year, lessons have been held online and as I happily got to eavesdrop, I witnessed first hand the endless patience and flexibility his teacher Shark shows with him. Our son looks forward to his music lesson and actually misses it when we go on vacation.
Lastly, we also very much enjoy the opportunity to borrow instruments from their lending library, which is included in our membership.

Highly recommend you check it out! My siblings and I have been attending SF Rock Project since we were in elementary school and I am now graduating high school. All of us have learned and progressed as musicians, and learning at SFRP has definitely instilled confidence in my siblings and I as well.

I've seen several of their showcase shows from Devo, Led Zeppelin, Mike Patton, Zappa and Beefheart. The kids always put on a great show and the teachers are amazing. If I lived in SF my son would definitely be part of the SFRP

I signed up my daughter, Declan for SF Rock Project last summer. We are from Idaho but wanted to experience something more challenging in a bigger metro area. The team is incredible! It is not an ordinary rock camp. The caliber of talent within the students and the instructors, as well as the level of professionalism, make this camp ROCK in more ways than one. We will do it again and again until Declan ages out :)

SF Rock Project is one of Eddie's most favorite camps. He cannot wait to get there each day, even though he didn't know any of the kids in the program this week. The whole idea behind this camp is genius. The fact that a small group of kids get together on Monday, self select a set list, organize into "bands" and learn the songs well enough to completely crush them at the Hotel Utah on Saturday is completely mind boggling. Can't recommend SF Rock Project enough!

Great program! This is my son's 3rd year and he loves it. The staff really connect with the kids and have so much enthusiasm for what they do. The performance at the end of the week gives the kids a tangible goal to work toward and something to be proud of.

SF Rock Project knows how to rock and is committed to getting kids playing and up on an actual stage at a real club! Taught by cool local musicians and featuring a combo of private lessons and group rehearsals, their rock camp was my kid’s intro to the world of SF Rock project. Discipline and teamwork, music and performance are all apart of this all-ages, all-inclusive program. And when your kid gets on stage and rips that guitar solo and the audience goes crazy you and your kid are hooked!

San Francisco Rock Project is a wonderful organization run by folks that really care about getting the kids up on stage. They bring years of experience, distill it down and teach the kids what it means to rock.

My kids have been a part of San Francisco Rock Project for four years. Over that time, it has been a joy to see them not only develop as musicians, but also to develop their confidence and ability to interact with audiences and other musicians. Rock Project truly instills a sense of confidence and teamwork within the kids while also creating very strong musicians!

Both of my grandchildren have benefitted immensely by attending SF Rock Project. They have become musicians -- and not just musicians. They have learned all of the things we hope they will learn as they grow up: how to work well with others; the discipline to show up and do your best; how to push yourself beyond what you thought you could do... And, they have had fun and learned to play really good, classic rock music! And yes, it all started with the summer camps. I cannot say enough about SF Rock Project. IT ROCKS!!!!

It is not hyperbole to say that SF Rock Project has been the single most important thing in both of my kids' lives for years, and it all started with a week at camp. You ask, "Can they possibly teach a kid to play an instrument well enough to play songs, on stage, in a band in 5 days?" Yes. They can. What seems like magic from the outside happens every week all summer long. This is not just something to do for a week in the summer. This is an experience that they will remember forever. I could not possibly recommend it enough.

The real deal, not a t-shirt making craft party with the music amounting to plucking a few strings. SF Rock Project is a real music school and real rock and roll taught by musicians who relate well to children. My kids are inspired and learning and felling good about their own path in music thanks to SF Rock Project. I'm a believer.

My son has been rocking with the Rock Project since he was 9. Watching him develop as a musician AND learn to have fun on stage is amazing. I can't wait until he is old enough to join The Originals which is where kids musical creativity can hit a whole new level!!!!

This is "the real deal" for rock n roll aspirants and dreamers! The experience comes complete with hands on training on an instrument of your choice and singing. The camp ends with a performance on stage which is the ultimate experience. I was surprised to see how much my kid was able to do within five days! Shark, Guthrie and his crew do a wonderful job. All in all it totally worth it

Great, well run camp that is nonetheless very rock and roll! I love the commitment to making good music that Shark and his crew bring to SFRP, and this camp is now a highlight for my 11 year old son.

Outstanding summer camp. The Rock Project staff are the best and know their stuff! An awesome combination of 1-on-1 lessons with skilled musicians, fun camp activities and daily jam sessions. The final show on Saturday afternoon was a blast -- we couldn't believe how much the kids had accomplished. Of course the real judges are the kids, who both agreed that RP Summer Camp was an A+++!

Awesome teachers and really fun program. Izzy looks forward to it every summer and wants to do a longer program in the upcoming year.

The SF rock project staff are so generous and fun, the kids love spending time and learning with them. The rock show at the end of the week is a highlight of the summer.

Fantastic program, the instructors are excellent. The kids learn songs from a wide variety of musical styles, and my son always says how glad he is he learned about music he had never heard before. Quote: "Lou Reed is so much better than pop music, mom!" The instructors are so positive and encouraging of all the kids getting experience playing together and performing in real city venues. Great camp and year-round program, too.

This camp was amazing for my son and daughter. They loved that it was a mix of hanging out with no rushed frenetic camp schedule, plus hard work, and a crazy fun performance at the end to be proud of. It is expensive for a summer camp, but actually less expensive than other camps we looked at which included private music lessons. My kids joined the regular program, and it has become the most important thing in their lives!
