Our long-term objective is for each student to reach a chess rating of 1,250. A beginner is rated around 500, while the world champion has a 2,800 rating. To help students improve their chess, we will assign students homework assignments to play and practice chess during the week. We send parents a mid-semester analysis of their student's progress, along with recommendations from our coaches, plus a post-semester recap of their chess improvement.
What will you teach?
In the first 30 minutes, the instructor will use a series of puzzles that increase in difficulty that show a recurring theme. The instructor will allow time for students to solve the puzzle, and then they'll walk through the problem, showing students how to avoid common mistakes.
International Master Luis will be leading the Saturday Academy Class
After the 30-minute chess lesson, kids will play in an online chess tournament against their classmates. Games will be organized by their skill level (their ChessKid rating).
Online Lesson
Each online chess lesson will meet on Zoom. Students' microphones and cameras will be disabled. Students will interact with the instructor and moderator through Zoom's messaging feature. Other students cannot see other students' comments, but the moderator and instructor can respond to each student. This allows each student to solve puzzles without influence from other student suggestions.
ChessKid
Each Academy student receives a premium membership to ChessKid. This website/app allows students to play chess against their Academy classmates, access over 1,000 video lessons, 50,000 puzzles, and the opportunity to learn and play chess throughout the week when convenient.
