What is the Yes For Chess Academy?
The Yes For Chess Summer Academy is similar to an online summer camp, students have an all-access pass to learn and play chess during their summer break. With Zoom lessons twice a week and multiple opportunities for the students to play chess, kids can learn and play at convenient times.
The academy is open to all chess levels. Some classes will focus on fundamentals, while some are in-depth analysis led by an international master. All students are welcome to attend each class.
Students are welcome to attend all activities, but not required. Most students attend 1-2 Zoom classes and participate in 1-2 drop in chess games each week.
Zoom classes start at 2:30 p.m. PST Tuesday and Thursday
Drop-in online chess games are held Monday-Thursday on Chesskid at 2:00 pm . and 3:00 p.m.
Who teaches the class?
The academy features two resident instructors.
International Master
Luis Henrique Coelho learned how to play chess as a 15-year-old, and within six years became an International Master! His focus is now
becoming a Grandmaster. IM Luis has been teaching for 20 years and his passion for chess keeps the students enthusiastic about learning.
James Ursin is the Director of Teaching at Yes For Chess. This year will mark his 17th year of teaching chess in elementary schools. Students enjoy his fun approach and teaching style.
Zoom Classes
Each online chess lesson is held on Zoom. Student's microphones and cameras will be disabled. Students can interact with the instructor and
moderator through a Q&A feature. Students cannot see other student's and their comments, but the moderator and instructor can respond privately to each student. This allows each student to solve puzzles without influence from other student suggestions.
What will you teach?
In each 30-minute lesson, the instructor will use a series of puzzles that increase in difficulty that show a reoccurring theme. The instructor
will allow time for students to solve the puzzle, then walk through the problem, showing students how to avoid common mistakes.
ChessKid
Each Academy student receives a premium Gold membership to ChessKid.com. This allows students to play chess with classmates and access over 1,000 video lessons and puzzles, and the opportunity to learn and play chess outside of class.
We use ChessKid because it meets our standards for online student safety and provides a controlled playing environment to ensure that kids
learn in a safe setting
