Overview

This session takes campers on an exciting journey to explore the vital role of water on our planet and its connection to human development, sustainability, and chemistry. Through engaging STEM activities and challenges, campers will learn about water’s unique properties, its role as a crucial natural resource, and how to protect it for future generations. They will apply the Engineering Design Process to create the ultimate bubble wand while investigating the chemistry of water and discussing sustainable practices. The session concludes with a fun-filled “Water Day” celebration, featuring outdoor water activities.

Key Highlights:

  • Water as a Resource: Understand the importance of water as a natural resource essential for life, agriculture, and industry. Discuss how water connects ecosystems and communities around the globe.
  • Sustainability and Conservation: Explore ways to protect water resources by discussing pollution, water scarcity, and the importance of sustainable practices such as conserving water and reducing waste.
  • The Chemistry of Water: Learn about water's molecular structure and properties, including surface tension, through fun experiments like making and testing bubbles.
  • Bubble Wand STEM Challenge: Apply the Engineering Design Process to design, build, and test bubble wands. Campers will work in teams to create the most effective designs, iterating and improving along the way.
  • Global Water Awareness: Identify Earth's oceans, seas, and freshwater sources on a globe. Discuss challenges related to pollution, climate change, and access to clean drinking water in different parts of the world.
  • Water Safety: Learn essential tips for staying safe around water and what to do in case of an emergency.
  • Outdoor Water Fun: Celebrate “Water Day” with exciting outdoor activities like water slides, sprinklers, and water-themed games to cool off and have fun!

Learning Goals:

  • Gain an understanding of water’s importance as a finite natural resource and the need for sustainable conservation efforts.
  • Develop an appreciation for global water challenges, including pollution, scarcity, and climate impact.
  • Explore water’s unique chemistry and its role in everyday phenomena, such as bubbles.
  • Build problem-solving and teamwork skills by applying the Engineering Design Process to design functional and creative bubble wands.
  • Foster awareness of water safety to promote confidence and care around aquatic environments.

What to Bring:

Our daughter loved this summer camp! It was a safe and nurturing environment for her, and the engineering theme was awesome. She keeps saying how she wants to be an engineer when she grows up! Great hours and lovely staff. Will absolutely send her again!
