Overview

Student-Teacher Ratio 10:1

In this fun and interactive session, kids will explore the fascinating world of germs—microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Many children confuse germs with “bugs” and might not fully understand why we’ve taken health precautions (like wearing masks). This class will clarify what germs actually are, how they spread, and why some are beneficial while others can make us sick.

Participants will also learn about good sanitary practices, such as handwashing, to prevent the spread of harmful germs. As an exciting finale, campers get to see bacteria from their own hands grow on petri dishes—bringing the world of microbes to life before their very eyes!

Key Highlights

  • Introduction to Microbes: Discover the different types of germs—bacteria, viruses, fungi—and their roles in our health.
  • Good vs. Bad Germs: Understand how some microbes are beneficial while others can be harmful.
  • Hands-On Experiment: Culture bacteria from kids’ hands on petri dishes and observe their growth over time.
  • Healthy Habits: Learn best practices like proper handwashing and sanitizing to avoid spreading germs.
  • Real-World Context: Discuss why masks and other precautions have been important in recent years.

Learning Goals

  • Recognize what germs are and identify different types (bacteria, viruses, fungi).
  • Understand how germs spread and how we can protect ourselves through hygiene.
  • Foster curiosity about the microscopic world and its impact on our daily lives.
  • Develop an awareness of the importance of health practices to keep ourselves and others safe.

What to Bring

  • An open mind and a sense of curiosity about the microscopic world.
  • (Optional) If you have sensitive skin, bring your own gentle soap or hand sanitizer for demonstrations.

This session sparks curiosity in science and helps kids develop a better understanding of how and why hygiene is essential—all while having fun seeing real germs grow in their own mini-lab experiment!

Our daughter loved this summer camp! It was a safe and nurturing environment for her, and the engineering theme was awesome. She keeps saying how she wants to be an engineer when she grows up! Great hours and lovely staff. Will absolutely send her again!
