Why An Innovators of Kindness Camp Theme
We developed our Innovators of Kindness Camp and Activity theme because of the pressing need for more engaging hands-on enrichment activities and quality recreation schools and our communities that meet the needs of ALL the youth in our community.
Our team loves to create and implement fun activities with young people and our experience with hands-on activities and creating activities and experiences that cater to the diversity of play needs for the youth in our community allows us to offer a camp experience that can be fun for all.
Since 2017 Innovation for Youth has been developing activities where all youth (including youth with developmental and physical differences) can have fun together. Our activities were originally developed as fun activities that young people could do at a Magic Bridge Playgrounds (with generous funding from Magical Bridge Foundation), but as our project has developed, we soon realized that there would be many other applications for the work we are doing….particularly to create recreation enrichment experiences which are fun and accessible for all youth!
Examples and Approach of Our Camp Activities
Some examples of our activities are:
Our crazy fun spin art contraption machines that allow all youth regardless of their fine motor skills to be able to make colorful spin art.
Creating a scale model inclusive playground with arts and craft materials.
Writing messages in Braille (Because our camp fall on Valentines Day, we will be making Valentines Day Cards with braille messages).
Taking a test drive in a wheelchair. It's fun to try out a wheelchair and doing so fosters empathy for those that need to use wheelchairs for mobility.
Magical Bridge Playground - Our Outdoor Laboratory for Play for All!
Our outdoor inclusion laboratory and free play space for our camp in Magical Bridge Playground in Palo Alto which is a very inclusive and fun playground is a convenient and a short 15-20 minute walk from Greenmeadow Community Center (where our camp home base is located). we love about Magical Bridge Playgrounds is that it is such a fun place for ALL to play.
In this camp theme, we explore how Magical Bridge Playgrounds are fun for everyone. Our exploration of Magical Bridge Playground as an outdoor classroom is a conversation starter for a lot of fun activities where we explore how to make a more inclusive world (both in terms of infrastructure and socially).
We actually have several wheelchairs that we use for these short walks. For some campers, they might need a break from walking back and forth to Magical Bridge Playground. For others, having a wheelchair available even though they can walk gives them an opportunity to develop empathy for those that require a wheelchair for mobility.
One other significant feature of our camp is just our kind, skilled and caring team! We are fortunate to have a team that is personally invested in creating an inclusive and caring camp environment and that shows up in the joyful experiences that our participants can have in our camps.
