KITCHEN CHEMISTRY
Delve into food science!
This theme focuses on the science behind mixing and combining ingredients. Girls mix, measure and experiment using kitchen ingredients as science tools. They explore states of matter; super-saturation; the chemistry behind fizzy, repellent or delicious combinations; and the molecular change when things are heated and cooled. But what are they really doing? This is the fun part! Favorite projects include rocky candy and egg geodes (crystallization), liquid spherification (a favorite!), no bake granola, shake-it-up butter, solar s’mores ovens, and, definitely, diy ice cream. Equal parts chemistry, recipe experimentation, and fun!
SPA SCIENCE
Mix, layer, shake, scent and make your own spa goodies!
Mix it, make it, try it out and take it home! Girls become spa scientists for the week as they learn about soothing, fizzy and smell-good ingredients and how to combine them. They start the week by inventing their own spa brand and packaging – complete with spa caddy and eye mask – then they make all the products to go along with it. The week closes with a spa party (of course!) for the girls to sample and share what they’ve made. The packed line-up of projects includes fizzy bath bombs, chocolate body butter, peppermint foot scrubs, lip smackers, bath salts, soapsicles, yummy face masks, and soooo much more!
SPY SCIENCE
Learn the science behind everything *SPY* and use the clues to solve the case!
Always a super-popular theme! Girls learn the science behind everything SPY in a clever mix of chemistry, physics and biology. Over the course of the week, they use their findings to create a case file, collect clues and solve a mystery. Solving the “whodunnit” is the best way to end the week! Projects include DIY intruder alarms, cipher disk and scytale decoders, sneaky spy periscopes, and extracting DNA (from a strawberry!). Other activities include analyzing footprints, dusting for fingerprints, sending secret messages in invisible ink, and crafting their own gumshoe bag of disguises. See if you can crack the case!
SPACE CRAFT
A crafty sneak peek out into our vast and inspiring universe!
This theme focuses on the magic and mystery beyond our earth. A twist on last summer’s “Space Out” – we’ve design a week full of hands-on projects and crafting around space studies. Girls make projects related to the stars, constellations, nebulas, space storms, and the enormous variety in the make-up of the moon and planets. Favorites include twirly copters, stomp rockets, lava lamps, kinetic sand, glittery moon rocks, sun prints and diy blacklights.
OOEY GOOEY SCIENCE
It’s gloopy, it’s gloppy, it’s slimy, it’s science!
A fun theme for girls who like trying a lot of experiments and who don’t mind a little mess! We use all sorts of ingredients to mix, measure, combine and react in different ways. Our favorite projects include anything that goes fizz, glop, bubble, or pop! We get ooey, gooey and slimy. Our goal is for girls to experiment in science creatively, without worrying about a right answer -- but with a focus on learning and fun.
CREATIVE CREATURES
Create your own zoo of crazy little creatures… learn a little science, do a lot of making!
Girls learn about animals, their habitats and some crazy cool facts. And they spend the week inventing their own collection of creatures. Creative activities introduce them to the dichotomous key (can you spot the icky jellybean?), social groupings (like a tower of giraffes), behavioral traits and clever adaptations (did you know otters hold flippers so they don’t drift away while they sleep?). Favorite projects include funnel-head animals, fish on a leash, glow in the dark jellyfish, elephant toothpaste, and Dr. Seuss pet parks.
