Overview

An introduction in learning to sing while exploring important black singers and songs of the 20th century. In this class students will learn some vocal warm ups, learn the basics of singing, and practice the basics of singing with the music of important black singers and musicians.

We will do some listening, some singing, and some discussing of the following and attached.

  • Warm-Ups (with Live Piano): Stretching, Humming, Black-Lives-Matter-Too, Basic Scat Warm-Up 
  • The importance of Black artists in the development of music - especially singing! Before there was radio - enslaved people sang songs on the plantations to spread hope, communicate secret messages, and give directions to the Underground Railroad. Songs are still sung today. 
  • Listen to & decode "Follow The Drinking Gourd." 
  • Ella Fitzgerald, The First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz: "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing"  from the beginning to 1 minute and 55 seconds. 
  • Aretha Franklin from 1 minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes 10 seconds to "RESPECT" Briefly discuss her life and fight against racism. 
  • Briefly discuss Billie Holiday's life, fight for equality against racism, and briefly listen to "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm." From 3 minutes and 5 seconds to the end. 
  • Learn & Sing "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm"
  • Learn about Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, and Louie Armstrong. Learn & Sing "When The Saints Go Marching In"
  • End with a message of hope. Learn & Sing "What A Wonderful World" - What we all hope and work hard to achieve.

Wow this was amazing. My boys loved the teacher. They shared they liked how happy she was and they thought she had a pretty voice. They continued singing the saints song.

Also as I listened to the history given, it felt good to ask them about what they learned how much they retained. I thought the teacher did an excellent job balancing the delicate topic of racism.

Being a teacher myself I thought she was clear, educated through fun and song and really did a wonderful job.

I will be looking out for other classes to sign up. She mentioned the choir I think would be great to sign up for.
