Overview
Chromatography is the process of separating out the various components of a compound or solution so that they can be readily identified. This experiment will help kids observe how the permanent marker’s ink spreads and separates into different colors. This is an interesting scientific and artistic experiment which yields colorful results for kids as they create their very own vibrant t-shirts!
Materials needed:
-Plastic tablecloth or newspaper (to protect the surface);
-100% cotton White t-shirt that fits the kiddos;
-Empty sturdy container/jar with a wide opening (i.e. coffee can);
-1 Rubber band big enough to go around your container (have extras just in case)
-A variety of colors of Sharpies (Black, Brown, + red, blue, yellow, green, pink, orange, etc.);
-70% Rubbing Alcohol;
-a small disposable foam or plastic cup (to pour rubbing alcohol in);
-a pipette OR a straight straw
