STEM HOUSE is a collaboration between San Francisco State University's Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CSME) and the Department of Elementary Education. STEM House engages upper-division undergraduate students in bringing hands-on, high-interest science learning to elementary school students. Undergraduates first receive training in both science content and effective teaching techniques. They then work in teams to deliver high impact science experiences in a small group learning environment.
For Spring 2021, we will be offering the STEM House experience remotely via an after school enrichment program. Parents/ Guardians of students in grades 3, 4, and 5 may sign up their child for one or both of our four-week sessions.
All meetings will be on Wednesday afternoons from 3:45-4:45 p.m.
SESSION II: Climate, Ecosystems, and Engineering
LAB DATES (all are Wednesdays, 3:45-4:45): April 21, April 28, May 5, and May 12.*
In this four-week session, students will learn about the special features of frogs that make them important indicator species for scientists who study ecosystem health. Students will investigate the properties of membranes and then use this knowledge to engineer a way to keep a wayward frog safe and healthy while being transported back to its natural habitat.
*It is important that registered students attend all four weeks of each session they're participating in, as each lesson builds on the previous one.
