STEM HOUSE is a collaboration between San Francisco State University's Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CSME) and the Department of Elementary Education. STEM House engages upper-division undergraduate students in bringing hands-on, high-interest science learning to elementary school students. Undergraduates first receive training in both science content and effective teaching techniques. They then work in teams to deliver high impact science experiences in a small group learning environment.
For Spring 2021, we will be offering the STEM House experience remotely via an after school enrichment program. Parents/ Guardians of students in grades 3, 4, and 5 may sign up their child for one or both of our four-week sessions.
All meetings will be on Wednesday afternoons from 3:45-4:45 p.m.
SESSION I: Bees, Butterflies, and Bioengineering
LAB DATES (all are Wednesdays, 3:45-4:45): February 24, March 3, March 10, and March 17.*
In this four-week session, students will investigate how natural pollinators serve as a critical component of local ecosystems. They will examine the structure and function of flowers and their pollinators and learn about key pollinator species and their role in both biodiversity and agriculture. They will engage in a bioengineering design challenge to develop possible solutions to changes in pollinator populations.
