Our 5 year old is finishing his week of dog camp today--he absolutely loves it, and is hoping he can do it during winter break if at all possible (he doesn't want to wait until next summer). If you're a GenXer, like me, and believe that kids should be able to explore and play in nature the way we did when we were kids in the summer, this is for you. Yes, it's safer than our unsupervised time (sun screen and shoes were not a thing for little boys when I was growing up), but Laura has a great sense of letting kids be kids as long as everyone's nice and nobody is getting hurt. I have a feeling his week at Dog Camp is something he'll be talking about for a long time, and my son has already asked when he can come back.
Lastly, our son was the youngest and smallest at the camp, but in way that was really good for him. He's the smallest in his grade (because of his birthday), and when he ran into some friends at another camp (that he's starting next week), he remarked how small they seemed--I know each week the makeup of the camp varies, but I'd just say to parents: This mix of ages is a good thing. Some of the older kids looked after our son, and our son gained confidence around kids of all ages. I draw this out because for my son at least, this wasn't just a fun way to spend the day, but a lesson in a small bit of independence and a lot of self-confidence.
