About
San Francisco Maritime

San Francisco Maritime is the nonprofit partner of the San Francisco  Maritime National Historical Park. Our year-round educational programs bring maritime history to life for children throughout the Bay Area. In our week-long summer camp program, kids explore all the activities the park offers, experiencing the San Francisco Bay through the eyes of a sailor and a scientist.

Our campers get to explore the best the San Francisco waterfront has to offer--both by land and sea-- every day! Each day, they spend half of their time on the water learning to row and sail our fleet of small craft, and the other half on a field trip to one of the many excellent adventurous and educational locations nearby. Campers explore the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, tour the USS Pampanito (a WWII submarine) at historic Pier 45 learn about the science that made her function, explore various stem concepts, and much more. At the end of the week, we sail out on the Bay and under the Golden Gate Bridge with a partner company.

Our Staff

All of our staff are college graduates, or have 2 years college and 2 years relevant work experience in the field of education. All staff are livescan fingerprinted and background checked. Summer Camp staff are usually recruited from our year-round staff who work on a variety of day and overnight field trips aboard the Park's historical ships. They teach historical empathy, STEM concepts, and life skills like leadership, teamwork, communication, confidence, perseverance, and more. They are highly trained during our annual 4 day staff training, our monthly staff meetings, and a week long summer camp specific training.

My son LOVES sailing camp. He did it last summer as well. I love that there is staff continuity - a great team! They knew him from last summer and were so welcoming and kind. Very accommodating when we had to make a late schedule switch. My son wants to continue with this program until he becomes a "counselor in training" when he is older. So thankful for this fun, skill-building, adventurous way to spend time on the Bay.

Best camp yet! Second year in a row and looking forward to next year already, too. I never thought I'd see the day when my 10 year old would forgo trains for another hobby...until last year's Maritime camp. It's been nothing but boats, boats, boats of all kinds since then. A wonderful team of counselors and staff, and an overall amazing experience for the kids.

My son had a great time being out on the bay. The activity changed slightly each day which he liked and the staff were friendly and engaging. We will do this camp again, for sure.

This is a late reply, but yes, we wear lifejackets or PFDs when in and around the water. So long as they are comfortable around the water and can wear a PFD, they are welcome to join and become more comfortable. -
