Words in the Wild summer camps are offered by Building on the Best, a local Oakland non-profit organization providing strengths-based literacy programs to children and families.
In our camps rising 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders grow their love of reading and find joy in writing while getting their hands dirty in the gardens of Fairyland, Lake Merritt Botanical Gardens, and the Kaiser Roof garden.
Our program helps campers enhance critical literacy skills in reading and understanding text, enjoying text and using it for a purpose, building oral and print vocabulary, making connections between spelling and meaning, writing independently and fluently. Campers also engage in fun summer activities.
The beauty of our program is that it provides literacy embedded in hands-on garden science and connected to arts, cooking, and other enrichment activities in the afternoon. Campers blossom into garden scientists as they observe, document, and explore the natural world.
Camp Director and lead teacher Dr. Alexis Filippini is the creator and executive director of Building on the Best. She earned her PhD in special education at UC Santa Barbara and worked as a behavior clinician, reading specialist, and researcher before taking on leadership roles in education.
Ryan Nepomuceno will be returning for his third year as the Master Garden Teacher and Science Curriculum Advisor. During the school year, Ryan ("Mr. Nepo") also teaches experiential environmental education at a school garden in Oakland with kindergarten through eighth-grade students.
Ella Holton-McCoy is our graduate Teaching Fellow who is completing a master's degree in educational therapy. This highly competitive Teaching Fellowship is designed for post-baccalaureate educators looking to gain experience in research-based reading instruction and fun student-centered teaching practices.
Primary staff are supported by both returning and new counselors and counselors-in-training who have experience in strengths-based youth development practices.
All teachers are CPR/FirstAid certified and have passed comprehensive background checks.
