About
UVA Brain Camp

The UVA Brain Camp is a neuroscience-themed summer camp hosted by the UVA Psychology and Biology Departments. Through hands-on interactive experiments led by UVA neuroscientists, campers will learn fundamental concepts of neuroscience and basic lab techniques. UVA Brain Camp is free and accessible to local middle school students and 9th graders who identify as members of underrepresented communities or who are otherwise financially disadvantaged.

UVA Brain Camp is set for July 19th - 23rd!

Each day of UVA Brain Camp has a theme designed to teach students about some of the most important neuroscientific concepts. These themes are You and Science (Monday), Anatomy and Physiology (Tuesday), Genetics (Wednesday), Sensory Systems (Thursday), and Cognition and Emotion (Friday). Each day is split into morning and afternoon sessions with an hour long lunch break (lunch provided) in between. Additionally, optional after-hours care (with additional science-related activities) is provided to those who need it! For a detailed day-to-day program see below.

Our Motivation: We aim to develop a novel educational summer program that will ignite and inspire young scientific minds through hands-on experience in Neuroscience. The UVA Brain Camp week-long summer experience will expose children to the brain, how it works, and how to nurture its development. Additionally, through this camp we will develop a mentorship network between UVA students and scientists and the greater Charlottesville community. This network will support and guide participants’ future scientific education and success. Our ultimate goal is to inspire and facilitate young students to pursue their scientific interests and do our part in addressing known disparities in STEM fields. Finally, this program also aims to provide UVA students with opportunities to develop skills related to scientific outreach.

Our Staff

Amalia - Prior to graduate school, I worked as a research assistant for a large lifespan data sharing project in New York. During this time, I helped organize an outreach BrainDay event four times a year to educate and engage the local community in Neuroscience through family-friendly activities. After moving to Charlottesville, I volunteered as a mentor at Computers4Kids and as a graduate student at UVA, I run a developmental neuroepigentic research program investigating the biological mechanisms that contribute to healthy social neural development in children. Working with children is one of my favorite things about my job and I can’t wait to teach young scientists about all the amazing things our brains do!

Rolf - I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at UVA in Dr. JC Cang’s where I study the physiological development of the visual system using mouse models. I also did my graduate studies at UVA in Dr. David Hill’s lab where I studied the development of the taste system. Throughout these experiences, I have gained expertise in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and the development of sensory systems. I have also gained extensive teaching experience as a teaching assistant for a variety of Biology and Psychology courses. Prior to my time as a graduate student, I was a summer camp counselor at Camp Lincoln in Nisswa, MN.

There will be other counselors who come from various backgrounds such as neuroscience researchers, education, teachers, childcare, business, and more.
