About
The Berkeley Chess School

The Berkeley Chess School’s chess programs are designed for beginning, intermediate and advanced students of all ages (grades K-12). The Berkeley Chess School  provides rigorous training in chess while making the process fun, with skilled and engaging chess coaches and an eye toward personal growth.

The Berkeley Chess School offers after school chess classes in schools throughout the bay area, Friday night programs in 4 locations that include a class and a USCF rated tournament game each week, Master classes, Sunday novice classes for kids ages 5-8, the Bishops training program for advanced players, an all girls class, chess camps, weekend tournaments and more.

The Berkeley Chess School is a nonprofit organization offering chess instruction from kindergarten through high school since 1982. Over the years our students have won many state championships and several have gone on to become National Masters, FIDE Masters, International Masters, and International Grandmasters.

Our Staff

The program includes chess instruction at multiple levels for those entering grades 1-12. All campers must know how the pieces move and have an enthusiasm for chess. Emphasis is on the joy of the game but with a serious eye to the student’s progress. New material will be presented each week of camp.

Our camp for beginners was the first 2 weeks of camp only:  June 18-22 and June 25-29. This camp introduced the absolute basics to campers. Children learned  the names of the chess pieces, where they are placed on the board, and how they move.

We also offer summer chess camps in Bencia, Burlingame, Concord, Hercules, Lafayette, Orinda, Piedmont, Pleasanton, San Ramon, and UC Village in Albany. All of these camps, except Albany, are sponsored by each city’s recreation department.

Special Intensive Camp with GM Sam Shankland!  June 25th-29th.  Morning camp from 9:00-12:00 is for adults and scholastic players with ratings of 1800 and above, and the afternoon camp, from 1:00-5:00, is for scholastic players.
