The Berkeley Chess School is a nonprofit organization offering chess instruction from kindergarten through high school since 1982. Over the years our students have won many state championships and several have gone on to become National Masters, FIDE Masters, International Masters, and International Grandmasters.
The program includes chess instruction at multiple levels for those entering grades 1-12. All campers must know how the pieces move and have an enthusiasm for chess. Emphasis is on the joy of the game but with a serious eye to the student’s progress. New material will be presented each week of camp.
Our camp for beginners was the first 2 weeks of camp only: June 18-22 and June 25-29. This camp introduced the absolute basics to campers. Children learned the names of the chess pieces, where they are placed on the board, and how they move.
We also offer summer chess camps in Bencia, Burlingame, Concord, Hercules, Lafayette, Orinda, Piedmont, Pleasanton, San Ramon, and UC Village in Albany. All of these camps, except Albany, are sponsored by each city’s recreation department.
Special Intensive Camp with GM Sam Shankland! June 25th-29th. Morning camp from 9:00-12:00 is for adults and scholastic players with ratings of 1800 and above, and the afternoon camp, from 1:00-5:00, is for scholastic players.
