About
Sol La Ti's Music Together

Sol La Ti's Music Together with locations in Morningside Heights, Harlem and Monroe NY has given the joy of music to its community since 1997. At that time jazz vocalist Gabriele Tranchina (with a strong background in dance) was searching for a way to share her knowledge with the next generation. She learned about Music Together through a friend and started her locations after completing the MT training. Music Together started out as an early childhood music and movement program bringing music to little ones starting at birth. Being research based they believe that early exposure to music and movement is the ideal, for music development as well as brain development. Adults, regardless of their musical ability, can help create an environment that supports children in their desire to learn and to become creative music makers. Children of mixed ages participate at their own level by singing, moving, chanting, listening, and exploring musical instruments. Parents and caregivers participate with the children and receive music development information about their own child. Together, music allows for fun and family bonding. Sol La Ti's Music Together will be celebrating its 15th anniversary on Sept 08. Aside from mixed age classes , we offer baby classes, classes for 3-5 year old children, a Music Together class in German and Creative Dance.

I've been taking both of my kids to classes with Gabriele and her fellow teachers since fall 2015, and it has been great in different ways for my two very different children. We do not have a whole lot of spare cash for kid activities, but this one has been a priority for me because I can see how well it is working for both kids.

My son is 4 and has some special needs, including social anxiety and sensory issues. I go with him to Jim's class on Saturday mornings and it has been great for him -- he enjoys the fact that the class has a predictable structure, where different instruments come out at different times and we get up and dance a couple of times per class, and at the end he gets to try out the guitar -- that kind of thing. It provides the perfect combination of reassuring structure and creative freedom to experience the music on his own terms, without pressure to sit still or do things the "right" way, etc. It has been amazing to watch him develop confidence and skills in the class -- not just music but connecting to the teacher and the other kids, helping to put the instruments away, saying hello" and "goodbye" and giving hugs, etc. It has also been great for him to have a class with a male teacher, since all his preschool teachers have been female. In between classes, he often talks about taking the 1 train to go see Jim and looks forward to doing it again.

My daughter, now 20 months, has been going to Tuesday morning MT classes with Gabriele since she was 6 months and LOVES every minute of it. When we started, she mostly chewed on the instruments (they are sanitized in between classes) and grinned at everyone. Now she claps along, dances, plays the instruments, and even sings the songs to herself at home! I've been lucky to be able to take her myself, but many of the children in the class come with their nannies who do an amazing job of participating along with the kids. The fact that the class is for mixed ages has given my daughter lots of slightly older role models to look up to and emulate as they demonstrate crawling, walking, or playing instruments. It's been really amazing to watch her learn and grow in the class.

I really recommend checking out one of the free demo classes, or passing along the info to your child's caregiver if that's who would be bringing them. They're all listed on Gabriele's website: http://www.mtsollati.com/schedule/free-demo-class-2/
