Overview

The National Streetcar Museum at Lowell is OPEN on Saturdays & Sundays from 10AM-4PM, year-round. Located at 25 Shattuck Street, learn more about the streetcar, more commonly known as the trolley. If you or your group loves railroads, history, transit, and Lowell, this museum is for you! Children will love our interactive exhibits and displays, especially our hands-on activities. Our knowledgeable volunteers will answer any questions you have, and give you a guided tour of our displays if you would like. The average museum visit by families is 45-60 minutes.

After stopping in at Lowell National Historical Park?s Visitor Center, visit us across the street at the Mack Building and browse our exhibit about the influence of street railways on the development of our cities.

Metered, on-street parking is available in front of the museum. Parking is free in the National Park Service Visitor Center Lot every day.

Before or after you visit, hop on one of the National Park Services? trolleys for a free trolley ride, with a stop near the museum. Trolleys are running on a reduced schedule this season due to the pandemic, but more information can be found on the NPS website.

Exhibits

View three stories of indoor exhibits that showcase the history of transit in Lowell and the origins of the trolley. Several hands-on children's activities are available! Trolleys are operating on Lowell's heritage railway, with a stop close to the museum. Our trolley playground makes for a great spot to hang out while waiting for the next trolley to arrive.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.

It was outstanding. The county historian did a great job of taking us around and explaining things to us and answering questions. The gentleman at the desk when we first came in was very friendly and helpful as well. We had a great experience at the TROUSDALE place
