Overview

Basic Arithmetic: Why do we study math? Young students will learn multiplication, subtraction, negative numbers, number lines, basic shapes from plane geometry, and numerous drill exercises for students to practice.

Fractions & Decimals: This class will help young math students become confi dent in their ability to solve those often tricky and difficult fractions! Students will become more familiar and comfortable with fractions, decimals, and percents through the use of daily practice, activities, and skill challenges. This course follows grade four standards for mathematics in CA.

Pre-Algebra: Topics covered: integers, fractions, decimals, and negative numbers; factorization; associativity and distributivity; roots and powers; PEMDAS; basics of equations; variable manipulation; Cartesian coordinate plane. Each day will include some lecture time, some practice problems with solutions, and worksheets. At the end of each day, we will connect that day’s material to the real world.

Algebra I: If you just completed Algebra 1 and want a review, or will be taking Algebra for the first time next year, this class is for you. Students will learn adding, subtracting, multiplying polynomial expressions, and factoring polynomials. The two standards are seeing structure in expressions and arithmetic with polynomials and rational expressions. Students will interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context, use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it, and perform arithmetic operations on polynomials.

Geometry: This course is excellent preparation for students entering an elementary geometry course. Emphasis in the class will be on the following concepts: deductive reasoning, geometric terminology and definitions, and applications of algebra as relating to coordinate geometry. A review of elementary geometry concepts as taught in junior high courses will also be covered. This class is ideal for students entering a high school level Geometry course.

Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus: Objective: To prepare students for the study of calculus – primarily by making sure the students’ algebra and trigonometry “foundations” are solid. Topics covered: functions (polynomial and rational) and inverse functions; sets and real numbers; trigonometric functions and identities; the unit circle; binomial theorem; polar coordinates; parametric equations; limits of sequences and series. Each day will include some lecture time, some practice problems with solutions, and worksheets. At the end of each day, we will connect that day’s material to the real world.
