Luck of Legends: Learning to Write Through RPGs!

Mr. Low’s Luck of Legends was our 8-year old daughter’s highlight among this year’s summer camps. The content was uniquely structured in a way that allowed students to freely express & write about their character. The class had a fun and lively vibe throughout the week. We wish we were aware of these sessions sooner. We are looking forward to the upcoming ones this Fall!

This class much exceeds my expectation. My 8 year old daughter absolutely loves Luck of Legends. The instructor is engaging, inspiring and super fun. My daughter enjoys writing the stories even after the class and I think it's a great place to light the fire of creative writing.

Our 9 y.o. daughter could not get enough of this class! She had been dreading a daily Zoom 2-hr summer camp, but although this class is offered remotely, it is NOT your typical Zoom experience. In the sessions that I overheard, every kid in the room was excited and engaged. By the end of the week, she was practically begging if she could take this class again. She LOVED the story-telling experience and Mr. Low gave her exceptional freedom and trust while setting up conditions for storytellers to strive and thrive, learning through struggle. I was SO impressed with the strong character development I witnessed, not only of their fictional characters, but also in their growing egos and identities. I am confident that this experience helped to boost her self-esteem around writing, which had been badly damaged in the public education system. Although she goes to what is considered a top public school, her third grade teacher made her hate writing. Luck of Legends has helped to rehabilitate her self-confidence and hopefully helped her recognize that learning happens as part of a team, something that Mr. Low excels at building. If you want your kid to learn soft skills, sign them up up! If you want your kid to learn writing, sign them up! If you want to feed your kid's creative spark, sign them up! I guarantee you, they will achieve all three AND have fun doing it!!!

To say that our son was captivated by Luck of Legends is an understatement: “It was the best week of my life!”
We appreciated how Michael encouraged each child to participate, ensuring that everyone was comfortable along the way. He allowed for creative freedom and flexibility that gave the kids a sense of ownership in the storyline while also holding them accountable to plot and character motivations. He was playful and enthusiastic, lighting up the kids’ imaginations.
It was impressive how quickly they began to build a world and weave together a storyline with detail that even included the foundations of a goblin language! After each session our son was eager to expand on the work they had done as a group.
The spontaneity of collaborative story building was incredibly inspiring and it was exciting to see how it opened him up to new possibilities.

My 7 year old LOVED LOVED LOVED this class! By the 2nd day he was already asking to sign up for another session. His current session ended and he's so excited for the next one.
His school teacher has said the only thing he needs to work on is his writing, and he gets lots of writing practice in this class. The most important part is he's voluntarily writing. If he's told, "you have to write a paragraph/essay/answer" he will push back and not want to write at all but he will write a lot on his own; letters, raps, stories, etc. When he's told to write, especially if it's for a reason that doesn't make sense to him, he puts up a fight.
But if, like in this class, it's something he's interested in and he has a say in its creation, even working collaboratively with other kids, he will write and write and write.
The instructor, Michael, clearly loves teaching and working with kids. The class is well structured, he runs it very well and really seems like a perfect person for this.
I'm so happy we found this class!

I can't say enough good things about Luck of Legends and Michael as a teacher. I signed my 9 year old daughter up for Spring Break. I work from home full-time and so she sat next to me each day while I was working. I got to listen to her with Michael and the other students as they talked about their characters, thought through their storylines, and shared with each other. Offline my daughter was immersed in creating her story, developing her characters and coming up with different elements to incorporate into her writing. Michael has a gift of engaging kids and bringing them along with him on adventures. Oh, and I'm also a writer by profession so I got an extra delight out of seeing kids fall in love with storytelling.

I can't say enough positive things about Michael and the classes he weaves around each unique story and group of kids. My daughter (age 11) could not wait for each class to begin, and following each class she could not wait to contribute to the story for the next class. I also appreciate how skillfully Michael works to allow each child to express themselves and exploit their strengths, and yet still manages to work on some of the opportunity areas of ELA. My child will definitely be signing up for more courses.

The most fun you'll ever have playing role-play. You get to make your own character, right down secrets and lore, and just have the best time with other kids while you play! Thanks Michael!

Michael is very enthusiastic and kind when talking with kids. The curriculum is carefully designed and very engaging. You can tell the kids really enjoying participating in the story since they are very actively discussing things and having a lot of laughter. My son told me that he wants to do this camp all summer long.

My 10 y old son loved this camp. By the third day he said to cancel all other camps and sign him up for the rest of the summer playing Luck of Legends. After each session my son always had exciting stories to tell us. He said Michael is kind and enthusiastic.

My daughter absolutely enjoyed this camp! Michael is a fun, caring, and energetic teacher. His classes are super creative and engaging. I am so glad to see my shy girl found her kind of people in this class and became more confident. We have already signed her up for the second session.

This camp was amazing. My kid was totally engaged, shouting his lines, and plotting all night and the next morning what to do next. He asked me how to spell words so he could update his pet in the story and his ship in the story, and spent real time thinking about and articulating his thoughts. If only homework was this easy. LOL. I strongly recommend this camp for anyone who has a creative kid that needs a bit of focus. I was a bit sad I couldn’t participate in this kind of adventure myself.
I especially like the emphasis toward creative problem solving that didn’t involve laser swords and blasters. There’s a time for laser swords and blasters, but my kid doesn’t get to exercise other ‘muscles.’

My 12 years old son absolutely LOVED this camp. He is usually very shy and reserved, and don't like to interact at all in class. During this first week, I could hear him laughing, participating and leading discussions. He would go to bed early, to wake up early to be on time. I've never seen this behavior before. Thank you, Michael!

From Marlowe, age 12: "It was fun! We got to create our own characters and companion animals from scratch. There were templates to help. We did our own backstory and got to customize everything about it. The teacher was fun and nice. He made the story really interesting and put up lots of challenges for us and helped us through problems. It was fun to work together to solve problems."

This is just the best. It really came at the perfect time: no camps, no school, limited kid to kid interactions. Michael has done a great job creating engaging curricula, building an environment that pulls out the best in students, and using technology in smart and effective ways. I wish my local (or perhaps national?) schools would take note of what he is doing and implement it on a larger scale—it is immeasurably more effective than traditional e-learning and has really turned around the summer for our kiddo.

Highly recommend!! My son has had the most wonderful time with this camp. Michael, the guide, is a teacher who really knows how to engage. Together they built an entire world that opened up their imaginations so much. It is very creative. Even when it was over, my son loved the "homework" activities set, so much so, he was completely motivated and excited to get them done without any prodding! It has been a pleasure to see him so happy, gaining confidence in writing, and also learning life skills too, along the way, with this role playing game.

Our son Max loved the camp. He participated in the camp for two weeks and was very eager to continue! Michael is extremely engaging and has a wonderful ability to manage different ages and keep them fully engaged and during the entire two hours.
His story telling abilities and simply wonderful and you can see how the children's imagination is set on fire during the camp. Homework is not tedious at all. It gives the kids an opportunity to add to the story and to develop their characters.

Max is already asking us to sign up for the next camp with Michael! Thank you very much for doing such a wonderful job and for giving the children an opportunity to immerse themselves in the magical world of story telling!

My son LOVED this camp so much! Michael is so great with kids...he helped the group build vivid characters and developed a fun storyline. It was hard not to sit and just listen to him and the kids bring characters to life, create their backstories, describe the world in which they lived and the adventure they had. My son would immediately work on his "homework" (can you call it that if it was fun?) at the end of each camp and would tell me how much he enjoyed each session. I thought it was great that the kids not only were creative, but there was problem solving involved as well. Thank you Michael!
