Overview

Student-Teacher Ratio 10:1

Battle of the Bots is a great way to learn how technologies like programming, sensors, gears, and mechanics work, all while having fun!

Campers will learn the fundamentals of mechanical engineering as they team up to build robotic systems and compete against one another in tasks such as racing, sumo wrestling, head-to-head combat, and much more!

By the end of the week, campers will test their skills and see who can build the best competition bot to compete in the area in both autonomonus mode and controller mode.

This camp is a pre-requisite to entry into our iCode VEX IQ Robotics Competition Teams (Not all participants are granted entry, performance at the camp is also evaluated)

Itinerary

Monday:

Icebreakers
Introduction to Robots, definitions, examples, history, science, and components
Introduction to the VEX robot system
Group hands-on project: creating your first VEX robot from scratch
VEX robot activity 1, where the VEX robots complete with each other in a team activity
VEX robot activity 2, where the VEX robots complete in a more complex team activity

Tuesday:

Introductions to machines
Introduction to more complex machines and their applications
Applying the principles of machines to robotics
Introduction to programming fundamentals
Introduction to programming the VEX robot system
Introduction to VEX sensors
Introduction to gathering of sensor data and usage of the sensor data in VEX software algorithms
Group hands-on project where we apply our fundamental understanding of software programming to build an autonomous VEX robot that can make decisions based on sensor data autonomously without remote control input

Wednesday:

Revisit the learnings from yesterday, looking at more real-world examples of the two key types of robots
Creation of our second autonomous robot, which can utilize a different kind of sensor to perform a different quest autonomously
Our autonomous robot challenge, where the various teams showcase their programming prowess and robot build skills and share their ideas and learnings
Introduction to VEX competitions

Thursday:

Introduction to the seven stages in the Engineering Design Process
Go through each of the seven Engineering Design Process stages in detail
Apply the Engineering Design Process in the creation of the robot that will participate in the end-of-day group challenge; today's challenge will be remote-controlled
The winning team will share their ideas and tips

Friday (Final competition and presentation day)

Creation of the final tournament field
Application of the Engineering Design Process steps to modifications of the robot design to satisfy the new requirements of the final day team competition
Applying the programming principles to create software that will allow the robot to perform autonomously
Applying the Engineering Design Process to adjust the integration of the robot design and software programming
The final tournament
Winners explain tips and tricks that allowed their robot to emerge victorious
End-of-camp presentations in front of parents: parents are invited to arrive at 3.30 pm for end-of-camp presentations, 30 minutes before the regular end-of-camp time

My son fell in love with coding and robotics here. He took robotics classes as well as the "Battle of the Bots" week-long camp, which he says is the best camp he has ever attended (and we concur!) Terence is an excellent and patient teacher and you can tell he takes the time to plan his classes and projects in a way that keeps the kids engaged and motivated over time. I also appreciated that there is some light competition but that the atmosphere between the kids is collegial and supportive. I would definitely recommend taking classes or camps at this iCode.

Our kids loved this summer camp. They came home every day with exciting stories of the bots they built and the competitions they had against the other bots. They really liked their teacher, who has incredible credentials. They are sad that their camp week is coming to an end!
