Habitat Garden Summer Camp

Home Ground Habitats in Novato is an Organic Plant Nursery, Garden and Educational Center. Our goal is to create and manage animal habitat sanctuaries, and provide seeds, plants and educational resources for those eager to become habitat gardeners. Home Ground Habitats is located in Indian Valley, the ‘horse country’ area of Marin; large old ranchettes, open spaces, and networks of horseback and hiking trails all close by. On our acre we have gardens that are vibrantly alive and beautiful. Butterflies, bees, and birds abound, bringing the natural world to a landscape that also provides sustenance for humans. Our Education Center offers Classes to young and old. The demonstration gardens at Home Ground showcase a sustainable, organic approach to creating a truly California-friendly landscape using native plants and drought-tolerant Mediterranean species to increase the bio-diversity. Winding gravel pathways lead to hedgerows, wildflower meadows, a small fruit orchard, a vegetable garden, edible and medicinal California natives, pollinator plants, a ‘Monarch Way Station, and numerous larval host plants for other common garden butterflies. The whole property is a ‘pesticide free zone’. For children age 6-18 we have various SUMMER CAMP activities: HABITAT GARDEN SUMMER CAMP Summer Camp for children who want to experience the magic of our gardens. Hear delightful stories of the creatures and plants that live amongst us. Taste fruits and other garden treats. Search for gnomes, frogs, caterpillars and insects. Make nature crafts, grow butterfly friendly plants, play games, and explore! APPRENTICESHIP AFTERNOONS Opportunity for older students to learn about pollinators and habitat plants by assisting with planting and scavenger hunts, and shadowing habitat sanctuary experts doing garden work. PROTECT THE POLLINATORS BRIGADE Learn how to create a habitat corridor to help save the Monarchs and protect pollinators, and help make an actual pollinator corridor in Novato! Also take specific pollinator plants home to plant in your own yard/neighborhood.
