Every artist has his or her own formative moment - one of wondrous delight in watching ideas leave the mind and come to life.
This camp will celebrate creative expression in various forms, highlighting different artists and techniques and allowing each child to access the innate creative spirit inside. Throughout the week, we will engage in different art practices including: printmaking, portraiture, photography, sculpture, mural art, still-life painting, and collage. Materials will include different types of paint, ink, printing tools, textured paper, recycled materials, and wood. Each day will involve the study of an individual artist’s journey to finding their own unique style. Highlighted artists will include Yayoi Kusama, Jackson Pollock, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Vasily Kandinsky, and a very special instructional visit on wood artistry from local Park Slope artist Bernette Rudolph. You may see her wonderful work and learn more about her here.
Throughout this camp, children will connect with their creative and expressive talents, immersing themselves in the process of making. We will also foster a dialogue about the creative process through artist critiques where each child can share thoughts and feelings. This will help to provide concrete examples of how different people express the same thing in different ways, and help each child feel empowered in their own unique style. Artists of all skill levels are welcomed and nurtured. The final day of camp will be an artist exhibition.
