LAB SCHEDULE:
Microscopy Basics - Tuesday, January 25
Students learn about different types of microscopes and how they work, as well as practice the proper use of compound microscopes.
Slide Preparation - Tuesday, February 1
Today, we practice making wet mount slides of plant and animal cells and learn the importance of creating realistic drawings of our observations.
Plant Cell Structure - Tuesday, February 8
Students learn about the cellular structure of plant cells, identify plant organelles, and look at pollen and plant roots under a microscope.
Zooplankton, Phytoplankton and Diatoms - Tuesday, February 15
This week, we investigate zooplankton, phytoplankton and diatoms, learn where they live and study their diversity.
Animal Cell Structure - Tuesday, March 1
In today’s lab, we focus on the cellular structure of animals and compare tissue samples from various organs to study the diversity of animal cells.
Science of Viruses - Tuesday, March 8
Students study the science of viruses, how they infect, how our body protects itself and then create their own virus art.
Bacterial Science - Tuesday, March 15
Kids learn about helpful and harmful bacteria, examine what they look like, and conduct a bacterial culturing experiment.
Soil Microcopy - Tuesday, March 22
We investigate soil as a complex living ecosystem, what it is made of and explore microscopic creatures that live in the dirt.
Pond Critters - Tuesday, March 29
We study the biology and diversity of aquatic protozoans, algae and animals collected from a local pond.
Fungal Science - Tuesday, April 12
Students learn about yeast, investigate mold hyphae, mushroom gills and spores under a microscope and examine see how these decomposers spread.
Scanning Electron Microscope - Tuesday, April 19
Kids learn how scanning electron microscopes differ from compound microscopes and try to figure out what the SEM images were created from.
Microscopy Everywhere - Tuesday, April 26
Students look at everyday items close up to observe unexpected textures and shapes using the microscope.
