Camp Common Ground is an overnight camp and year-round leadership program that brings together 6th-8th graders from different socioeconomic and racial backgrounds.
Our youth walk away with the leadership skills needed to bridge gaps and break down cultural barriers between youth from different backgrounds. Campers get the best of traditional camp like swimming, sports, hiking, and archery, as well as specially designed workshops to build empathy, leadership, and an understanding of identity. It is a unique opportunity for youth to build lasting friendships with kids they otherwise wouldn't meet and to learn important social-emotional skills like listening and conflict resolution.
Unlike most summer camps, acceptance into the program includes three reunions during the year, in which campers reconnect with old friends and work on their Plans for Disruption to make change back at their schools. Acceptance also includes a second summer to further develop their leadership, and access to alumni events. There are partial and full scholarships available. We have highly qualified staff and a less than a 5:1 ratio.
Our staff members are primarily professional childcare workers. For example, most of our staff are school teachers, residential counselors, social workers, or professional facilitators.
Several of them have experience at related dialogue programs, such as Challenge Day, Mosaic Project (inter-racial and inter-class peace building), and New Vision (inter-faith dialogue). With a few exceptions, our counselors are college graduates, primarily in their late 20s and 30s, and some have advanced degrees such as MA or PhD.
We have high expectations for our staff and know they are the most essential component for us reaching our outcomes and providing a great experience for your kids.
