Overview

Our camp is focused on exploring and playing in nature. The goal of this camp is to let children be children, letting them play in nature while learning about their surroundings and the balance in nature.

Each day we take a small group of children and after meeting up for circle in the morning, we head off to different local state parks, beaches, creeks and farms.

Some of our past adventures include:

  • A day trip to Harley Goat Farm to look for frogs in the pond, visit the goats, pig and the Alpaca before heading to Pescadero beach to play. (We do not go into the ocean waves.)
  • A day trip to Half Moon Bay we might hike to see some horses or swing on a cool rope swing before heading to one of the local beaches to play. Depending on the beach we might dig for crystals at “dog beach”, build sand castles and explore the tide pools or
build a driftwood fort at San Gregorio State Beach.
  • Hiking through the Redwoods at Memorial County Park or Purisima Creek to play at the creek. We try to catch and release crawfish, count the banana slugs along the way and look for newts.
  •  A day trip to Hidden Villa to see their big garden, the farm animals and hike in the forest to play at the creek.

On all of our adventures, we have seen everything from the smallest insects, frogs, banana slugs, turkeys and deer to watching whales spouting and birds of prey flying.

Please, make sure to pack a snack and a lunch for your child and provide a booster seat if your child is under 8 years and 80 pounds.

Regarding COVID Precautions:

We will have 12 children per group or less in the van and at this point masks are optional.

Children will need to bring their own snacks along with their lunch and water bottle.

When the children are outside playing it is suggested that they do not wear their mask.

This camp has been absolutely *life changing* for our son. Instead of being cooped up on screens all winter break or stuck in a classroom he has been getting out into nature, making new friends, learning about our world and getting some exercise! He comes home with his mind, body, and spirit enriched each day. Will definitely be returning for all break offerings.

Very disappointing experience. They advertised outdoors and nature —rain or shine— but instead locked up the kiddos in an indoor play house for most of the day — when it was not even raining — and got many of them infected with bronchitis and flu. Counselors were on their phones and not providing any fun activities. Reached out to the owner — zero response.

I apologize, but I thought we did talk. It was supposed to rain pretty hard for 3 days so we went to La Petite Playhouse on Tuesday after playing in the rain all day on Monday. We were at the playhouse from 9:30 to 11:30 and then spent the rest of the day at a large lovely park outside. We went back to the playhouse for about 30 minutes to gather the belongings that were left and play for a bit. None of the other camp kids got sick. Wednesday we were back playing in the forest in the rain, making fishing poles and catching and releasing crawdads and counting banana slugs at Memorial County Park. The other children LOVED that they got to go to the playhouse to take a break from the rain. As for the counselors, Nina and I were playing with the kids on the play structure, playing soccer, volleyball, basketball and Air hockey. There was so much to do and everyone else had fun! So sorry that your son didn't have fun. Maybe he wasn't feeling well that day? Best wishes and Happy New Year! Kathy

Both boys came home covered in sand and dirt and completely exhausted. That’s exactly what we want from a camp!!! They even requested to go to “nature camp” instead of the school after care on one of their vacation days because “hiking is better for us than electronics all day!”
Questions & Answers
What is the average age of kids in this camp? I am really interested in the winter camp. But my kid is only 5.5 years old. I am afraid that he won't be able to catch up with the older ones. (Hummingbird Kids Winter Break Camp) -

Hello! The majority of the camp kids tend to be 5 to 9 years old with only a few 10 to 11 year old kids. We don't do anything strenuous and keep the pace geared for the younger kids speed. The hikes are short with lots of playtime along the way to look at critters as we go. Your little one will have a great time at camp if they like playing outside in nature. Please let me know if you have more questions. Thank you! Kathy -
Will the winter camp hold if it’s a rainy day? (Hummingbird Kids Winter Break Camp) -

Yes, we will have camp if it rains. When it rains we typically go to the redwoods and hike through the forest to a creek to play. We make fishing poles and try to catch and release crawfish. The children will need to dress for the weather and they are welcome to bring an umbrella to camp. -
Thank you Kathy! One more question - we can’t do the whole week as school starts. What will you guys do on Monday and Tuesday for the camp? Will Tue involve paddle boarding or kayaking? Thanks again

We will paddle Monday and Tuesday. It depends on what the kids want to do as far as kayaking and paddle boarding. We also go for bike rides along the coastal trail. We usually go to the redwoods later in the week to take a break from the sun. We hike to the creek to catch crawdads and go swimming. -
