About

Epworth United Methodist Church is the meeting place for dozens of community programs - from after-school German language classes, to children's musical choruses, to art classes, baby and toddler playgroups, Tai Chi and meditation classes and lots more.

For over 40 years, parents of young children have connected through Epworth Playgroups, a non-religious two hour playtime for toddlers, and opportunity for their families to meet and get to know one another as they traverse early parenthood. In 2015 a baby playgroup was added and is going strong.

Epworth also hosts two summer camps for kids in grades K-6. Creative Arts Camp explores a myriad of studio art disciplines: printing, sculpture-building, printing, drawing, painting, sewing and more. Add to these fun activities daily park-time, skits, stories, yoga and community building!

Peace Camp empowers kids to be peacemakers in the world through community service activities, storytelling, meditation, yoga, arts and crafts and more.

My daughter attended Epworth Playgroups weekly for a full year from 1-1/2 years to 2 years old. My daughter, who is an only child and at the time was living in a neighborhood with no other children nearby, really flourished at Epworth! The once weekly routine of gently structured activities (playtime, wash hands, snack, play, put-away, song time, bye-bye) was exactly what she needed in terms of socialization and readiness for daycare and preschool!

It was also really helpful as a parent to connect with other moms, learn songs, and have a non-errand place to go with my little one. My daughter even had a birthday party at the Epworth playroom! This is a great, gentle program and a superb resource for parents in the East Bay!!

What an absolute joy to be a part of!! As parents of a six month old, we relocated to Berkeley four years ago. During that time we had little community. Attached to any move you find yourselves with the ever growing list of action items and the added bonus of anxiety in retaining resources/community for the promotion of social/emotional growth in your child. Susan Jardin, head of Epworth Playgroup, did just that in maintaining such a warm space for families. Upon entering the playgroup we were welcomed with such care and quickly established our community. From doctor references and neighborhood activities to creating a simple environment of understanding and support, Epworth Playgroup became our family and continues to be today. The parents we met continue to be our support system and best friends. We watched our children learn to walk, talk, communicate with others and blossom in a way that now finds them blooming into Kindergarteners together four years later!! The structure of the playgroup was so conducive to learning for both children and adults alike. While our children snacked together the adults did the same...with the added bonus of adult understanding and laughter at the chaos that’s attached to parenting. As a former Early Childhood teacher I was overjoyed to find such a well designed space for my little family. I absolutely can’t thank Epworth enough for all that they’ve done for us and continue to do for families today.

I loved Epworth Playgroups. It's such a warm, caring and fun environment for both the kids and the parents/caretakers and is a great transition to preschool or if you're just looking to get out of the house with your kids. I took both my son and daughter when they were young and they still remember it and ask to go. I met so many great people from attending and learned so much from them. I couldn't imagine my kids' early childhood without Epworth. I highly recommend it to others with young children.
