Overview

Student-Teacher Ratio 8:1

SFCAC’s summer camp programs offer our process-oriented approach to artmaking, which focuses on experiential learning and honors children’s creative choices. Our small class sizes ensure each child feels seen and celebrated. Our activities are designed to spark the imagination, build critical thinking skills, and enhance creative self-expression. Through our focus on interactive participation and open dialogue, we support young artists as they build social and emotional skills and make meaningful connections with their peers.

Weekly special topics:

Art & Nature (Week of June 9)
Explore the beauty of the natural world through the lens of creativity! Combining studio time with outdoor exploration, we’ll transform our observations of nature into creative expressions through painting, sculpture, and mixed-media.

Land, Sea & City (Weeks of June  30 and August 18)
Land, Sea & City is a special art camp that combines creative time in the art studio with walking excursions in the Fort Mason area where we will draw, paint and create art inspired by the natural and built surroundings in our unique location

Drawing & Painting / Architectural Sculpture (Week of July 7)
In the mornings, connect your head, heart, and hands through drawing and painting. We’ll learn how to capture what we observe and use our imaginations to draw and paint the things we wish to see in the world. In the afternoons, we’ll channel our inner architect to build 3-dimensional structures and settings using foamcore, wire, wood, paper and recycled materials.

DIY: Art from Scratch (Week of July 14)
DIY means Do-It-Yourself! This week, we’ll make our own art materials that we’ll use for our artmaking. We’ll discover how to make our own paper, build our own drawing and painting tools, create custom rubber stamps, and much more!

Art & Science (Week of July 28)
Approaching visual arts through a scientific lens, we’ll explore basic science concepts through painting, drawing, sculpture, and more. Working both indoors and outside, students will observe and express the wondrous world around us.

Photo Explorers / Books & Boxes (Week of August 4)
In the mornings, we’ll discover the art of photo mixed media with digital photography combined with drawing, painting, and collage. In the afternoons, characters, scenery and events come to life! We’ll create books and boxes of different shapes, sizes, and textures as you develop imaginative plots and illustrations to tell your stories.

Printmaking & Sculpture (Week of August 11)

In the mornings, we’ll create a variety of images and patterns with collographs, stencils, stamps, and block printing. In the afternoons, creativity comes in 3-dimensions as we build sculptures using paper, wood, wire, clay, and other materials.

We asked our 3.5 year old to rate hi art class with Miss Gale, explaining to him that 1 star is “not fun” and 5 stars is a lot of fun. He says 5-stars.

This camp & Amy exceeded all my expectations for a zoom camp. I would love for our kid to go here again!
We have been doing online camps this entire summer for our 6 year old. Our experience with SFAC was by far the best! Our instructor was an absolute joy from a parent perspective. She took care of each kid in the class, every one was encouraged to express themselves in any way that they like. Each question was answered. The environment she created was IMO exemplary for art, especially over zoom. Other classes have noise/too many kids. This was quiet - everyone could hear each other well. She played music during work times -- which I also enjoyed :)

And perhaps the best part was she asked kids to provide inputs about each other. It wasn't just about do your thing and that's it. They were encouraged to hear and be attentive to each other.

We go here with our 2.5 year old son and he loves painting, drawing and play dough activities. Teacher Gail is nice and friendly with kids, she has taught kids for many years. On a flip side, I think sfcac could have done better in developing kids' creativity by breaking routine of painting-drawing-playdoh-story with occasional new activities.
Questions & Answers
Hello. I was about to register my 2 kids (ages 7 & 10) when the website informed me that there was only one space left.... Oh no! Is it possible to squeeze both of my kids into this camp, or a similar camp the following week? Thanks for considering. Cristina (Art Camp at SF Children's Art Center) -

Hi Cristina, It's possible that additional spaces could open up, but I'm not certain which week you're interested in. -
