Mendocino 2024: Between Pacific Tides

Our 10-day Mendocino session places us at a large group site at MacKerricher State Park, an ecological wonderland, a short distance from spectacular headlands and sandy beaches. We investigate the local plants around our camp and rise before dawn to explore the rich inter-tidal invertebrate and algal life of the North Coast’s world-class tidepools. Each year, our campers discover new treasures: sea urchins, abalone, octopi, and many species of sea stars.

We visit the spectacular landscape of the sand dunes and their strange ecology at the Ten Mile Dunes. We hike the coastal terraces of Jughandle Preserve up to a pigmy forest, where ancient, fully mature trees are shorter than some campers and spend time in solitude watching the sunset over the ocean. This year, we spend July 4, cuddled together on tarps enjoying the local fireworks display at Noyo Harbor.

Time at the beach playing games like “Shoes in the Sand”, woodworking, jewelry making, and seaweed drying and cooking highlight our activities. Due to the ecological abundance of the area, our Mendocino session frequently allows us to experiment with local foods: seaweed salad and thimbleberry and red huckleberry cobblers. We never know what new dishes campers and staff will create!

This Camp Chrysalis session concludes with a five mile catamaran trip up the tidal estuary of Big River to a rope swing and lunch spot. In old redwood logging stands recently preserved by a citizen campaign, we learn first hand the impact of logging and the importance of preserving our natural heritage.

All sessions leave at 9:00 AM from 2434 McKinley Ave, (off Dwight Way) in Berkeley. The return times are 4 PM for the Big Sur session, 5 PM for the Mendocino session, and 6 PM for the Sierra session.

My kid attended programs there from the age of 7 until they left for college. At every session and absolutely loved it - and so did we. Lee Tempkin's philosophy is to promote independence and support the kids in challenging themselves to do more than they believed they can do. Staff members are fantastic, and really do pay attention to who each camper is as a human being. During the years our kid was a Chrysalis camper they were also well-priced relative to other camps. My only caution is that you should cover the interior of your car with sheets and/or tarps before picking your kid up. I honestly did not know it was possible to get that filthy! However, scrape away the dirt and you will find a happy, exhausted, confident young person who had a tremendous time.

My kids have been going to Camp Chrysalis for 5 years and both loved it! Great outdoor experience and great way to get away from electronics. This year we've invited a new friend to come and he loved it and wanted to go back too! Can't wait for the next camp!
